To All EDS Adult Students and (Instructors):
Adult's Night Out!!

With the holidays fast approaching and before we all get in the typical holiday rush - I thought it might be nice for an end of the year adult's night out.

Here's what I was thinking - let's meet up at Cousin's Bar and Grill (Perryville and E. State St-Rockford)Saturday 12/1 at 6 p.m. for beverages and possibly dinner.

If you are interested please respond to this post or if you see me at class let me know. I can make the arrangements with the restaurant after I find out the numbers of of attendeess. I'd like to have a count of those interested by November 23rd.
Thanks.

I have to say that I am incredibly impressed with Elite Defense Systems but especially Matt Numrich and everyone involved. The world of martial arts has always intrigued me but it wasn?t until recently that I felt it was something that I just had to do. Its sad to say that it took a threat upon my life to get me to I realize that I was unprepared and uneducated with how to defend myself and my family. When I first decided that I wanted to train in some form of martial arts, I opened the phone book and began to search. At the time, I felt desperate and scared. I needed an answer to my prayers and a resolution to my fears. I feel that I have found it with this program, not just for me but for my daughter as well. I feel honored and excited to be a part of the Elite Defense System group. With that said, I just wanted to tell all of you involved thank you. Thank you for the opportunity to learn and train with all of you, I am truly blessed.

Got to say I am really digging the Eskrima classes. I would also like to thank Kevin for his input and instruction, his advice on being to linear and using your angles really has helped me out. Keep up the good work guys. I can honestly say I walk with more confidence since joining EDS.

I would like to take a crack at the question posed by Matt on the recent Pepper Spray newsletter. I would think that the 1st best self defense weapon is a weaponless self defense, i.e. an awareness of your surroundings, planned escape route, or verbal de-escalation before you need to rely on your physical training.

I'd like to respond to Khalid's questions. First about the brush up stuff... Hate to say it, but regular classes are the best option. Once a week, twice, whatever. If you want the skills, you have to put in the time. Other than that, your fundemental skills shouldn't fade that fast. Couple rounds with the RAT program on a heavy back 1-2x a week will suffice.

Secondly, about the friends "playing rough". Stay away from it, easier said than done. Any "fighting back" will only give your friends more fuel to "play" more. Find a time when they are sober to sit down and simply ask them to stop... If they say why, tell them that your Sifu said so. Seriously, if they don't settle down after a serious talk, maybe they're not really friends. Furthermore, if they can't control themsleves around friends, what bad decisions would they make against people they don't like.

-Take care and God Bless,

I started at EDS about 3 years ago with a solid 20 seconds worth of physical stamina. Now I can wrestle 5 consecutive matches without burdening the 911 dispatchers for emergency services. Matt, thanks for training me.

Matt,

Two questions 1) how can a former student do periodic brush-ups? I don't necessarily have the time to committ to a weekly class, but would gladly pay to join in some of your beginner / intermediate sessions periodically so I don't get too rusty.

2) Some specific advice for knowing how to deal with "friends" who play rough. Some aquaintences of mine who are have experience fighting/wrestling like to horse-around sometimes when we are out, say at a bar shooting pool or something, after a few beers. One guy in particular who is a good wrester likes to get you "play" jabbing around with him, and then he always seems to escelate it into A) getting the other guy on the ground and B) choke-holding him until he taps out. All this in the name of "fun" of course. Now, I don't want to head-butt my aquaintance at the bar - How would Sufi Matt handle a situation like this? Seems to me the hard part is realizing whether or not I have a "real" conflict on my hands or not, and how to deal with this type of aggressive behavior when it gets rough.
