Bruce Lee vs. Mixed Martial Arts

MIXED MARTIAL ARTS MAY NOT BE WHAT YOU NEED?
My student?s life was saved by knowing the difference!

I?ve been getting a lot of questions lately about the unique art we teach at the Rockford and Bloomingdale Academies (we?re only 1 in 12 in the Midwest who are fully certified in Bruce Lee?s art of Jeet Kune Do (JKD).

Here is an article I wrote responding to several questions revolving around Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and JKD. Thought you might enjoy it. I also included some videos of our Men?s and Women?s self-defense classes. I?ve included the YouTube links here:

Here is the article, ?How does Jeet Kune Do Compare to Mixed Martial Arts?:

How Does Jeet Kune Do Compare to Mixed Martial Arts?
If you?ve ever watched a MMA fight or UFC match, you?ll see that the fighters use multiple techniques and moves to try and bring their opponent down. Televised fights like these have spurred an incredible interest in all types of mixed martial arts (MMA). Many people interested in learning mixed martial arts inevitably find themselves looking up information on the different styles and choosing to learn more about those that strike their interest. Many mixed martial arts styles, such as Jeet Kune Do, draw on techniques from a wide variety of fighting styles ? while cutting out much of the superfluous techniques and inefficient moves that slow down a fighter or cause them to be less potent or direct in using the tools at their disposal.

Benefits of Learning Jeet Kune Do
Jeet Kune Do itself can?t really be compared to mixed martial arts fighting because the two complement and are part of each other. You won?t hear a student of JKD say that Muay Thai is better than Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or that grappling is a better method of taking down an opponent than fencing. That?s because Jeet Kune Do pulls from several different disciplines (most notably boxing, fencing and Wing Chun) to give the fighter exactly what he or she needs to be able to fight ? nothing more and nothing less. In addition, JKD has no predetermined patterns or fighting techniques, but rather allows the student the flexibility to take what suits them and leave the rest behind. It is this accepting philosophy and methodology that have made Jeet Kune Do so popular.

MMA and JKD Draw from Similar Backgrounds
At their core, MMA and JKD expect similar results from their followers. Students should know how to adequately defend themselves and attack within several ranges of combat ? with or without weapons. Unlike in some other fighting styles, where defending oneself is done by means of moving away from the attacker, JKD emphasizes moving toward them ? in a sense, intercepting their attack. This kind of stop-hit is also evinced in the name Jeet Kune Do itself ? meaning ?The Way of the Intercepting Fist?.

Bruce Lee often commented on the ?flowery? movements of traditional martial arts or, as he sometimes called it ?the classical mess?. He insisted that the only real way for a student to understand what methods work best for him or her was by actually engaging in direct combat. This helped hone the student?s fighting readiness without wasting time or effort. This kind of ?take what you need and leave the rest behind? philosophy might not look as good on the dojo floor ? but it will most certainly come in handy when you need to fend off a gang of thugs or protect yourself or your family from an attacker!

DAY #54: Cardio time!

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

Wanted to do something different with my cardio workouts, as I work up to the Grapple-A-Thon. Therefore, each day starting last Monday, I add on a 3 minute cardio exercise. Monday I started with the Elliptical machine, then yesterday I added another 3 minutes with the bike.

Given that my toe is healing, but still sore, I?ll add the stair climber for another 3 minutes? for a grand total of 9 minutes of total cardio. Right before the Grapple-A-Thon, I should be around 50 minutes of a whole list of different cardio methods.

I?m also helping my wife train for her 5k? I?ll be talking about that sometime in the near future.

Lee, Love and Life,

Sifu

Ps: Remember, no class this Saturday or Monday!

DAY #53: … Moe… Catch a Sifu by the Toe

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

DAY #53: ? Moe? Catch a Sifu by the Toe

I was grappling last night, building up my endurance for the Grapple-A-Thon, which is a week from Saturday. When I got home I could barely walk on my foot, mostly due to my right big toe. I don?t think I broke it, but I definitely sprained it. So, no running this morning, or any other kind of a workout. I might head into the gym later on today? we?ll see.

Here are some other things I?m working on, as I heal up:

(see previous on yesterday?s entry)

4. Roll more? Even with my foot injury, I?ll be rolling a couple times more a week, just to put in more time on the ground. If you want to swim longer? get in the pool. If you want to ground fight longer? get on your back.

5. Moisturize up!… You didn?t see this one coming. Many times when you ground fight for long periods of time you?ll shoulder blades will get very raw. If you have dry skin as I do, make sure you keep your back well moisturized to prevent your skin from causing you too much pain. Can you tell I?ve been ground fighting for a while?

6. Change your lifting strategy? Given that I have two back to back Grapple-A-Thons to do in less than two weeks, I couldn?t care less about building mass in the weight room. Therefore, when I?m headed into the gym, I?ll do more of a circuit program with light weight and very high reps (30+) to build my stamina.

Check in tomorrow and see what I?m doing cardio wise?

Sifu

Ps: Are you handing out those quarter page flyers yet? Please do! They are available at the schools.

DAY #52: Grapple-A-Thon Prep

Monday, March 29th, 2010

With some mega ground fighting coming up for me soon, here are some changes I?m making, getting ready for the event. If you want a perfect way to drop those extra pounds you?ve been carrying around, and/or increase muscle tone, do two things: 1. Sign up for the Grapple-A-Thon and 2. Take a look at implementing these things:

1. Make cardio an everyday thing? leading up to the event, I want to make sure my body is fully ?use to? working out everyday? so working out that day doesn?t produce any physical, mental or emotional ?shock?.

2. Watching my diet closer? The big killer is empty carbs, including sugary items. Massively decrease those to one small portion per day for these last two weeks.

3. Increase water? Speaks for itself. If you need to ask why, make sure you let me know so I can slap you upside the head next time I see you.

More tomorrow? Get started on these today and see a huge difference in how you look and feel in the next couple weeks.

Lee, Love and Life,

Sifu

Ps: Note the extra community based seminars we?re running the hour before each grapple a thon.

Day #5-0: Clarification on Times

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

Here are the updated times for the events on 4/10:

Bloomingdale:
9-10am: 3 in 1 seminars
10am-Noon: Grapple-A-Thon Bloomingdale

DAY #49: Seminars for Everyone… you know.

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

As stated yesterday, we?ll be holding 3 mini seminars right before each Grapple-A-Thon. These will be donation only, and 100% will be given to the Haiti Relief Project. Please pass on the word to everyone you know, and invite as many people as possible.

I?ll be handing out small quarter page flyers for you to pass around and pin up at work.

Lee, Love and Life,

Sifu

Ps: Did you see our new curriculum page yet?

DAY #48: What is your focus?

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

Here is #6 which I try to do more and more each and every day: Ask yourself questions ? What is the end result I want? There are many ways to ask this question, so change it to meet your liking. Ask it in your finances, relationships, and even your spiritual life. I?ve been wrestling a lot with treading water in a couple areas in my life, and this question helps me get back on track.

Here is another schedule change I wanted to get to you asap:

I’m tacking on a free 3 in 1 self-defense seminar for adults, females, and kids… all the hour before the Grapple-A-Thon, at each location. That changes the times slightly:

9-10: Seminars, Bloomingdale
11-Noon: GAT, Bloomingdale

1-2pm: Seminars, Rockford
2-3pm: GAT, Rockford

I?ll be writing more about his tomorrow.

Lee, Love and Life,

Sifu

Ps: I need everyone?s help in getting out the word on the seminars above. Please stay in touch with this blog and our Facebook pages to learn how!
