How much do you know about…

Wednesday, November 17th, 2010

Welcome to the Elite Defense Systems Christmas contest!

How much do you know about Bruce Lee, Jeet Kune Do and Elite Defense Systems? Well, if you know a little, you could win some pretty cool things… and if you know a lot, you could win some very nice things.

Here is how it works. I’ll post a total of 12 questions on this blog over the next 6 weeks. If you check in enough, I’ll even post plenty of hints to help you wins some very cool prizes. Here is the big rule you need to have down: When replying to a question, you must copy and post the question to get prize.

Therefore, if I ask: What was Bruce Lee’s wife’s name? You would respond in your post:

What was Bruce Lee’s wife’s name? Linda.

Easy enough?

The Grand Prize will be given out at the end of the holiday season on New Years! What is the prize? How about “prizes”! That’s right, multiple items to the person who gets the most answers correct (as long as you always post the question(s) first, then the answers. Fair enough?

Keep these questions and answers to yourself! Don’t post anything until the end of the contest. Those 12 questions are the keys to your success!

Up until that time, I’ll ask an additional SIX questions for smaller prizes. The first person to post the question – and answer to those win immediate prizes! So once again, keep the answers to your 12 questions to yourself (I’ll number them 1-12)… Answer the six mini questions (lettered A-F) immediately! If you don’t also post the question with the answer – your answer doesn’t count! Even if it is correct! Got it? Ok! Let’s start!

(Keep this answer to yourself.)
1. What are Bruce Lee’s childrens’ names?

(Answer immediately to win Volume 1, 2 or 3 of the Complete JKD Street Fighter DVD series.)
A. Who taught Bruce Lee his first art, and what was his name?

Looking forward to the answers (and questions!). If you have problems posting to this blog, please email me at matt @elitejkd.com .

Holiday Homework, Studying Fights

*Child warning*

We’re taking off the 24th of this month until January first. Please rest up your body, because January will be “go time”, as we’ll be pumping up the intensity in all of the classes… Yes, even the youth ones.

That doesn’t mean we can’t study some fight footage though! First let me warn you that these video clips are NOT for children to watch. So if you have junior on your lap reading this, please dismiss him/her from the room.

This is mainly meant for my adult students. Even my parents of the youth students… You’ll learn stuff too. Let’s watch now, and talk more later. Watch the clips, and answer the questions to keep your mind sharp over the break!

These Youtube clips will probably need you to sign in, as there is a “Child Warning”… they are pretty brutal, but will serve as a great learning experience for all of us. Here you go!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9KEHJd7hRHM

Answer these questions:

1. What ranges did you see in action?

2. Name three ways this fight differed from a tournament fight.

3. What surprised you about the fight?

My goal here is NOT to be offensive, so I appologize about the “rawness” of the video/language. Sometimes we need to look at the bad to serve the greater good.

Much more videos and questions to come, so stay tuned through the holidays.

Merry Christmas to you – and your family.

Sifu

Where is Nik?

Here I am!

Just wanted to let everyone know I am all safe and sound, as Sifu Matt said a couple people have been asking. I had a couple business projects come up which have pulled me out of town on my teaching days.

All is good, Matt and I did not have a falling out, I am not in the hospital, etc., etc. Just a little overworked! Now get back to some more Carrenza!

The Power of the Internet.

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

I just picked up the new edition of Black Belt and ran across this in the editorial section:

“Go to books.google.com and type ‘Black Belt’ into the search box. You’ll be treated to every page of every issue-articles, photos, and ads-and the neat thing is, the pages are clickable. That means you can look at the table of contents and click on the kata story on page 75 and be whisked to the feature without having to ‘flip’ through all the intervening pages.

Furthermore, the text is serchable. Want to see every reference to JKD in the June 2001 issue? Enter JKD in the search box and each use of JKD will be highlighted in the articles and advertisements.”

Now if they can only come up with a multi-issue spanning search function.

Thoughts on the NAGA training

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

I just wanted to let everyone know how beneficial the NAGA training has been to me, and I am sure, to the other team members. Before I started training for NAGA I weighed about 220-225 (240 before I started classes at EDS, I’ve been here for about a year and a half). Doing NAGA gave me the motivation to eat healthy, work out every day, and keep it consistent. On top of that the whole team has helped everyone and encouraged them to keep it up. It has been a month or two since I first started NAGA training, and I am happily down to a stable 209 and dropping.

If anyone is thinking of doing NAGA next time, at LEAST do the training, it is one of the best workouts I ever get. On top of that if you plan to compete, you get the motivation to stay consistent and not slack off.

I want to throw out a big thanks to Dustin, Mike, Travis and all the rest of the NAGA people for just being there, making it fun, making it worth while. Let’s go win that tournament :)

Dustin

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

When in class this week Dustin announced that he would sadly be taking a step down from teaching at EDS to pursue other options in his career. I just wanted to say ?Thank You Dustin? During my time with you at EDS you have been a great teacher. You truly care about the training of your students and have a true respect for the art. I am very privileged to have had the chance to train under you. Your patience, knowledge and work ethic has had a huge impact on my training and development of my skills and so again I thank you. I wish you the best in your future endeavors and I hope that you will come back to the gym from time to time to let us know that you are doing well and to have some fun and train with us. For personal reasons I am sad to see you go, but for your own needs and reason I wish you the best of luck. For all you have done for me and my training I greatly appreciate it and hope to see you walk back into EDS one day. God Bless. Now bring back some belts from NAGA to close out your stay here.

Helping Kids & Families

Friday, May 9th, 2008

Hey there,

I wanted to let all of you know about a fundraiser I’m putting together on June 21st in Rockford. I’ve seen the difficulty kids from single family households sometimes have and I hope to help their situations. Not everyone has the same advantages in life we’ve had and take for granted.

I sponsor a Bocce Tournament and Pasta dinner at the St. Ambrogio Society Hall in Rockford. Bocce is fun and EASY! If you would like to enter a 4 person/mixed couple team in the bocce tournament the cost is $100 per team ( $25 per person). Team entry includes – Bocce/gifts/dinner/Elvis concert. (+ possibility of seeing ME onstage)

This year I have the band “ELVIS HIMSELVIS ” performing. Dinner and concert is $15 – Concert only is $12.

The Helping Kids & Families Fund, Inc. is a nonprofit organization. This year the monies raised will benefit Rockford MELD for their programs helping single parent households and St. Anthony of Padua Church for their programs helping families in need.

If you are interested in any of the above – please contact me, JT, via this log or my email at JT4ME_1@sbcglobal.net

Thanks… Or I mean uh… Thank you, Thank you very much!

Thursday, March 6th, 2008

Hey Rockford students and instructors! Is Rockford ready for another Night Out? JT and I have gotten together and started planning about Night Out for March 29th at Cousin’s, meeting around 6pm again. Is anyone interested? Those that came last time seemed to have a good time. So either let JT or I know and we look forward to seeing you there!
