I did it, I finally did it. After over 15 years of teaching Bruce Lee’s Art of Jeet Kune Do, I finally gave in to all of all of the pressure from my students. One of the most popular questions in my classes is, “Have you put these lessons on video?”.

My “tough in cheek” answer was always, “No, it’s called job security”.

However, in the past couple years I’ve received more accolades about my curriculum and standing in the “JKD and martial arts” community. The latest is being one of only a handful selected by Black Belt Magazine to chime in on Brue Lee’s contributions. In the October issue, the list included Dan Inosanto (Bruce Lee’s training partner), Richard Bustillo and Leo Fong… all who were actual students in Bruce Lee’s classes. There were only 4 more.

… Then there was me. Yeah, I thought they dialed the wrong number too.

That was further proof to make me follow up releasing this DVD series to the general public. The bottom line is that it underscores what most people call as being my biggest contribution to the JKD and martial arts community. It is not a new move I threw in, nor was it a new drill (although the defensive techniques and drills you’ll learn in this DVD series incredible!).

The specific contribution is that “X FACTOR” that has boggled JKD instructors and practitioners for decades. I feel like that was my mission… my purpose… and the focus of this DVD series.

I have so much more to tell you, but I don’t want to take up your time now. I’ve prepared a special 15 page report on the new series, as it is sure to rock the JKD and martial arts community. It will set the new standard with this “X FACTOR”, and finally gives students the secret of my success.

Well, it was my intention to blog every day, as I wanted to keep everyone up to speed on what is going on at EDS.

Unfortunately, my hernia has gotten worse, so I have an appointment with my surgeon tomorrow to see when that needs to get operated on. The pain really got in the way of my work last week, and pretty much shut me down for most of the weekend. With the exception of the last 12 hours – I’ve been in quite a bit of pain since my “blow out” workout on Tuesday… literally.

But, I did get up every morning and do my running and refocusing. Even did a training session with one of my staff members on Friday morning as usual. But… going through Friday into the morning, I know I couldn’t put off seeing the doc anymore.

Therefore, I’ll keep everyone posted.

This week we have the following programs starting:

1. RVC adult classes
2. RVC youth classes
3. Christian Life Elementary After School program
4. Carol Stream Park District classes
5. Downers Grove Park District classes

… I know, nice week to have some physical challenges.

I also can’t wait to share with you my current video projects… yes “S”… ProjectS. I have a team of students and other professionals who have been helping me with so much of these projects I can’t wait to put them in the spotlight. Stay tuned because I’ll be introducing them very, very soon… and giving my “blog” audience first sneak peeks and a chance to get their hands on them for a special price.

So hang with me… I’ll still be at my regular class times too.

3 months… I have a solid 3 months ahead of me of some massive programs and projects I’ll be launching. And, yesterday was the first one.

In short, I wanted to make sure I have some extra focus when I start my morning, so I decided that I’d do a very short run every morning Monday-Friday, put on some motivating music, and ram through some serious work from sun up till sun… a… till after the sun goes down.

I know if I wanted to do this (work stuff), and improve some of my physical habits, such as my diet, I needed something every morning to really get me pumped… So as I fall out of bed at 6am, I fall into my running shoes and I’m out the door.

Yesterday was the first day, and the running felt good. But then I continued on my new lifting program which Stephanie and I started about three weeks ago and doing a heavy leg day put my hernia (groinal… which I’ve had for about 8 years now) into massive pain.

For those who don’t know, I’ve had three hernias during my life… first one at 3 months of age. Must have been born with a weak midsection. Had my last one in-between football seasons during my Sophomore and Junior years in College. That one was caused by super heavy squats.

So as I’m sitting here in some serious pain, I’m now pretty motivated to get this thing fixed around the holidays. … I should have a break around then…

… But for now, back to training. Too busy.

I’ll be updating the blog about every day Mon-Fri. Like I said big stuff happening at and with EDS and I want to share it with everyone. I have some new video I’ll also spotlight on the student only site!

Many people don’t know that I received most of my firearms training from the most Senior Navy SEAL alive to date. We had a SEAL’s son join classes last night, so it was great finding some connection. Here is what he wrote in late last night:

“Hey Matt, I just wanted to email you since I didnt really get a chance to talk to you tonight. Your class was awesome and I have been around a lot of elite people and you guys sound like a broken record. The straight jabs (blast) is such a simple yet effective move. Violence of Acion is a huge weapon against someone. Make them question if they want to fight right away. Also, setting the tempo andf fighting on your terms are all great points. I loved the class and I will continue to bug you to get as much as I can because there is no point in doing anything unless you want to be the best.

That SEAL that tought you to shoot was Hershel Davis you said I think. My dad actually read that yellow sheet while I was at class and when I got home and told him you got your firearm instructions from a SEAL but forgot his name, he knew it from the print out. He is very good friends with Hershel and used to help him teach firearms at Great Lakes. Small world. If you still talk to Hershel ask him if he remembers xxx xxx (name witheld for security reasons). I remember Hershel in one of the first videos I watched about SEALs. He said “Some people think the 9mm is a small round, but they dont think that when we put 2 in their chest and 1 in their head”.

… The bottomline is that I challenged him with a goal in about 10 weeks. He has to last 30 minutes grappling without stopping… I’ll do whatever it takes to get people back in the game!
