Step #3 – Learn

February 21st, 2011

Ok, so you get up do a JKD solo workout, read something to stimulate your mind, and now what?

I say to pick something to learn. For me, I practice my Spanish. For you, it could be something different.

How much time do I spend? 10 minutes or so. What is 10 minutes, right?

Well, it’s an hour a week, and 4 hours a month, and 200 hours a year. Enough to get down a 2nd language… probably not, but that not all I do for my Spanish.

My point is this: Don’t underestimate what 200 hours per year can do for you. Could you learn a new trick for a piece of software, or could you read a couple paragraphs on a part of history you love?

Here is the second, subpoint… you won’t take 200 hours all at once, say 5 weeks straight of 40 hour weeks. You don’t have that time… but you do have 10 minutes a day… get it.

Big news tomorrow as I’ll be writing a big post on our Evolutions, instead of the video blog… check back!

Read this… really… read…

February 16th, 2011

After my mini JKD workout (which I’m making a quick video on), I go right to reading. What to read? You’re choice. I’ll tell what I’m reading on a later post.

Why is this important? Because this is YOUR time, YOUR time to grow… When else are you going to do it? At lunch…? Right… Before you go to bed? Maybe, but unlikely.

Dedicate 5-10 minutes to just reading… fill your mind with good stuff you’ll be reflecting on for the rest of the day.

So here it is so far: Mini JKD workout first, then read. What is next? Check back in soon!

The JKD Solo Workout, now what?

February 14th, 2011

I’m a fan of Tim Ferriss, author of the four hour work week. I was watching his blog, and he said something which is right in line with what I’ve been writing on my blog over the last couple of weeks.

Let me summarize:

True changes don’t come from one big event… For example, you don’t attempt to run a marathon hoping to lose 20 pounds in one day. True, real change, the kind that sticks – comes from small daily changes – like small deposits in your 401k.

I realized that with the amount of work I do on a weekly basis (about 60-70 hours per week), catching “big” training sessions many not be possible. The same with reading, learning a new skill, even correcting and healing my body.

Over the next several days, I want to show you exactly what I mean. As a result, I’ll be postponing tomorrow’s video blog and simply writing down the plan that I learned from some of my mentors. I hope you join me.

If you’re reading this, I’m guessing you’re a fan of self-defense in some way. If you are, I would encourage you to check out a simple self-defense program called “Insta-D-Fense”. It gives you 10 simple self-defense moves which anyone can do.

Enjoy!

Getting back on track…

February 7th, 2011

Sometimes there are those situations outside of our control which throw us off, such as the weather last week. How did you respond to it? Did it serve as an excuse, or worse, did it fit into your “story”?

What do I mean by this?

There are occasional excuses which are valid… If you’re car breaks down, you’ll probably be late for work. Valid excuse… I even like to call them explainations.

The trouble comes in when we make making excuses an art form. They sound good, look good… but in the end they are all excuses. For example, when bad weather hits, especially the kind we had here in the Chicago area, that may take out of your game for a day.

But is that a valid excuse to miss the day after? … Or even the day after that? Here is my point… “Stuff” happens. No doubt about it. However, many times it feeds into a “serial” excuse making domino effect.

A blizzard moved in and hit on Monday… but that is no excuse to trash Tuesday… which falls into Wednesdays… and heck by that time, why don’t you take off Thursday and Friday.

It is not so much about those instances when “Stuff” really does happen… but how YOU respond to it.

Live Broadcast Today, plus Saturday’s feedback!

February 1st, 2011

I was extremely pleased with the turnout of all the events, at both locations this last Saturday. The Review sessions went very well – as we jammed tons of info in a very short period of time. The feedback I’m getting from the Double Stick seminar was overwhelming! And, the CATT seminar… only CATT members know! ;) Last, but certainly not least was the Parents night out, as we had a record amount of kids attend at each location. I hope you parents had some great alone time! I’ll be posting pics and vids from the whole day very soon!

Mini JKD Solo Workout and More!

January 31st, 2011

First off, thanks to everyone who helped out and participated in the events this last Saturday. If you attended, I know you had fun! Thanks for all of the great energy!

Whether you attended or not, I know that a mini JKD workout, coupled with a handful of other things will truly get you off on the right foot every morning.

I talked last week about the half dozen or so things I do every morning. I specifically talked about the “Mini JKD workout” during the video blog last Tuesday, and will expand upon it tomorrow. Here is the summary:

1. 25 Eye Jabs, from the right and left hand. We talked about the secret of “loading”, which will instantly make you faster.

2. 25 Rodondos, from the right and left hand. I talked about the pluses about using an axe handle, which once again will make you stronger and faster.

3. We finished off this quick workout with 25 “kick backs” from each leg, down on the ground. This is like developing your “footwork” for the ground game, and is a must.

Rememeber, we’re just starting off with this… I want to make sure you can do these, before we move on.

I’ll be talking about the next step tomorrow, in addition to the video blog.

Sifu

Wrong side of the bed?

January 27th, 2011

As I talked about in the Live Video Blog this week, starting your day off on the right foot is key to getting things done in your personal and professional life… and just feeling happier.

One of my mentors taught me that I have to establish a “ritual” in the morning to focus my body and mind. Here is mine… I’ll be getting into what each part is in later blogs.

1. Mini JKD workout (discussed in video blog)
2. Read
3. Learn
4. Align
5. Focus
6. Plan

I’ll show you how you can take each point, and fit this into your life, for your goals.

Hang with me!

Lee, Love and Life,

Sifu Matt
